Introduction
We invite you to the International Symposium on Snow Avalanches and other Rapid Gravity Mass Flows, scheduled to take place in Isafjordur, Northwest Iceland, from September 30 to October 3, 2025. We anticipate around 130 participants will attend the conference in Isafjordur next autumn. Known as the vibrant heart of the Westfjords, Isafjordur acts as the main hub for visitors exploring the wilderness, including the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and the Dynjandi waterfall. During the devastating avalanches of 1995 in Sudavik and Flateyri, Isafjordur functioned as a central point for the rescue efforts, and today the surrounding area hosts many of Iceland’s largest snow avalanche mitigation measures.
The conference will cover the following topics:
- Risk management
- Environment and society
- Planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining mitigation structures, and
- The function of mitigation measures learnt by experience and experiments.
It is intended for attendees including local government officials, administrators, ski resort operators, road administrators, construction designers, regulators, and academics.
